Thanks, Anita. I had a really hard time getting a picture of one, because they seem to blossom out toward the top of the tree. The lower branches had one or two blooms, but that's about it. I'm glad I could find at least one to photograph. Our magnolia tree is VERY tall...towers over the house...and I estimate it's at least 60 feet high!

This is an old tree; before our property was built, there was an old farm house on site. The magnolia was next to it, so it had to have been old then. I'm guessing it's about 100 years old!

Thank you, Deb, for the exposure. I'm amazed at how much beautiful artwork you've collected and displayed in your journal! One could spend a whole day there and not see everything. You've got the best of the best, I think. And of course, I'm always honored and flattered to be included in that artistic group!

THank you very much, Barbara. These enormous flowers usually bloom way out of sight and reach (our magnolia tree is about 75 feet tall!), but I got lucky this year. There was one flower on the lowest branch (still over my head), and I got it on camera!

You mean it is a free hand shot?

:icondesmo100:

No, I had to focus it...I used the 300mm zoom and got up on a small hill to be at "almost" eye level with it.

I always admire your sharp shots. I always have the impression that they look like you used a tripod

Thanks, Barbara. I should use a tripod much more often, but often don't. I bought a tote for it to make hauling around easier, so that helps. If you have a 300mm lens, there's always a good chance of getting some camera shake and blurring in the image, so a tripod will eliminate that!

You have obviously a very steady hand and you can go far without tripod. I wish I had your hand.

It's not as steady as it used to be, but I always hold my breath when taking a shot. Consequently, I end up dizzy during hot weather! It happened today, in fact.

Thanks! I believe it is the SOUTHERN MAGNOLIA (M. grandiflora). They grow all over the place here!

Ah hah...yes, they're a gorgeous form of magnolia but not for our climes. We have lots here of different species so it's always lovely to see them come out in early Spring.

These magnolias are water guzzlers, so they wouldn't do well in a dry climate.

Thank you! Gardenias have everything beat, as far as I'm concerned. I had almost forgotten about them; it's been years since I've seen or smelled one....they are heavenly!

Well when I was visiting my daughter in GA and visiting her future in-laws, they had a gardenia bush and I couldn't believe it. She meant to give me a few to take with me but we forgot. And that was the first time I had seen them in some years myself. But I have to say, hers didn't smell as good as I remember them...maybe because usually I was in FL when smelling them and maybe the slightly different climate does something to the smell? Welcome!
